History

We are proud of our history of community service and our origins as grassroots response to alcoholism and drug abuse. The origins of Prairie Center include three community organizations: The Champaign County Council on Alcoholism, Gemini Foundation, and the Mustard Seed Foundation. The following timeline provides a brief review of some of our milestones.

PCHS Time Line

1968
· Mustard Seed Foundation is founded to “provide continuing care for alcoholics”.
· Champaign County Council on Alcoholism founded to provide education and increase awareness of alcoholism.

1970
· Gemini Foundation is founded to provide drug information and crisis intervention
· Mustard Seed Foundation opens a halfway house at 405 West Springfield in Champaign

1972
· Champaign County Council on Alcoholism and Mustard Seed Foundation merge
Gemini House and the CCCA set to receive funding from a county “708” referendum

1976
· Champaign County Council on Alcoholism opens detoxification program at
407 S. Prairie, Champaign.

1978
· Champaign County Council on Alcoholism moves all services to 122 West Hill Street
in Champaign

1980
· Gemini House and Champaign County Council on Alcoholism merge to form Prairie Center for Substance Abuse, providing comprehensive services for drug and alcohol problems.

1990
· Prairie Center moves administrative and outpatient offices to 718 Killarney St. in Urbana
· Prairie Center purchases land on Killarney St. for future building project

1995
· The Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse announces Prairie Center will receive funding for Vermilion County. Prairie Center rents space from Crosspoint Human Services and begins offering services in Danville.

PCHS Today

 Prairie Center operates 3 facilities located in Champaign, Danville, and Urbana offering a full continuum of care for drug and alcohol problems. Prairie Center provides outreach services in Rantoul, Paxton, Gibson City, Hoopeston, and at schools & community centers throughout our service area. We believe that our history of grassroots organizing and strong local ties is at the core of our effectiveness in responding to community problems.
