The goal of detox is to rid the body of toxins accumulated by drug abuse. For some, this may be their only contact with our alcohol and drug treatment agency. There are 10 beds available for this level of care. Over a year’s time some 600 adults seek crisis short-term detoxification services at our 122 West Hill Street, Champaign facility. Some find their own way, some are brought by family, friends, hospital staff or police officers. This medically-managed 24-hour/7 days a week operation is overseen by Prairie Center’s Medical Director, a doctor specializing in addiction medicine. Specially-trained registered and licensed practical nurses provide alcohol and drug assessments to determine medical needs, to admit for care, and to closely monitor persons withdrawing from heavy use of substances. Admissions and assessments are reviewed by the Medical Director, who provides standing orders and protocols implemented by the nurses. Nurses, nutritionists, and other specialists provide education and counseling services to each person undergoing detoxification. Drug, physical and emotional detoxification can take several days, even weeks, for long-term users. The medical professional may prescribe medication to help ease the pain of withdrawal. Counselors and nurses strongly encourage persons nearing the completion of detoxification services to take the next step by entering addiction treatment.
Prairie Center is dedicated to helping persons with addictions to find the appropriate treatment program and community resources that can move them closer to recovery. Professionals within the Detox Unit provide treatment information and referral services to each person as they complete the detoxification program.
